Commandment 11
John 13:34-35 (ESV)
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
Our Purpose
Hebrews 4:12 tells us “The Word of God is living and powerful,” and that it “discerns the thoughts and the intents of the heart” Commandment 11 has seen that scripture validated repeatedly while traveling across the country sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. As songwriters and music missionaries, Scott Jacobs and Philip Robinson have committed themselves to composing music that is bathed in scripture but remains relative enough musically to reach a broad audience of listeners. According to Scott, “There is so much music out there for people to listen to based on somebody else’s advice or life experience, and while there might not be a thing wrong with that, we want our music to express God’s advice for us and the lifestyle and love of Jesus.”
Commandment 11 began in January 2005. They are a non-profit organization and operate entirely on faith. Over the first four years of their ministry, the majority of their engagements were at churches and youth events. While that remains a vital part of their ministry, they have felt a new directive to go into prisons and recovery centers to let inmates and addicts know that there is forgiveness and cleansing available to them through the Cross of Jesus Christ. Philip adds, “It’s thrilling to be at a place in ministry where you can actively see the Lord leading and know what you are doing is being ordained by God. It is an incredible joy to experience God’s spirit working in some of the lowliest of places and to see men filled with despair find hope in Christ.”
In 2008 Commandment 11 released their 3rd CD entitled “Devotions.” The songs were all written by Scott and Philip and relate to many of the everyday struggles and difficulties that are experienced by followers of Christ. It is their prayer that when people listen to the CD they won’t just be stimulated by catchy melodies or intricate harmonies, but have their hearts transformed by the living and powerful Word of God. Scott comments, “We want there to be a connection between our CDs and our services. We don’t want to just appeal to our listeners’ emotions in a service or on a CD. We want their lives to be genuinely impacted by the voice of God daily. That is when real change occurs, and that is when God is most glorified!”
